Useful Statistics

Friday 24th October 2008 9:32am

t the 3rd of January 2008, 1 875 people were waiting for organ transplants: Kidney 1388 Heart 100, Liver 198, Lung 141, Pancreas 48. In 2007, 198 people had donated organs, allowing 626 transplants to be performed. In 2007, a total of 1108 people in Australia and New Zealand had donated their cornea’s transplants. By the end of May 2007, 1706 people donated other tissue while 1260 people had received donated tissue implants.

With one death every 4 minutes in Australia from Australian Bureau of Statistics, that is on average around 130,000 people die each year, and only 198 people become organ donors in 2007 giving the greatest gift of all.

We can all do better to increase the awareness and need for more donor’s in Australia.

This works out to be around .0135% of the current population become donors this is far from what we need. Even at best we should be around 1.0%

Why is this rate still very low?

Many reasons that which would take up 5 hours of your time to read about. Ye

Zaidee’s Rainbow Shoelaces is our national symbol, and the aim of the Foundation and of the Turner family is to make Zaidee’s Rainbow Shoelaces to become the national symbol for organ and tissue awareness. Many people feel and have already expressed to me personally it already has and should be known as our national symbol for organ and tissue donation awareness in Australia. Currently it is the only symbol that can be purchased by the public nationally and has been incredibly well supported from all sectors of the community from all ages, specially our children, and in having Zaidee Rainbow Days at their schools.

Our most elite sporting players to grass root clubs to politicians from both side of parliament with bipartisan support are behind the laces. Sporting clubs from the AFL, NRL, Australian Cricket players, NBL, WNBL, S
